-New Monasticism Panel on Ecological Challenges for the Church today, with Steven Bouma-Prediger, Norman Wirzba, and Sherrie Steiner (June 2004).  Spoke on the need for the New Monasticism to have a faith-based consumption and market ethic as opposed to a utilitarian, success-driven ethic.  Also spoke on the need for re-neighboring and engaging ourselves (and others) with industrial pollution, a dark-side of the American Dream.

-Manhattan Church, City Lights, Gathering: June 2004. Sermon on the three layered problem of 1) ecological devastation, 2) the biblical call to stewardship, and 3) everyday ways that we can take action.

-Right of Christian Initiation for Adults: (St. Peter Celestine Catholic Church): May 2004, 2005.  Spoke on the ethical dilemma of the Church faced with the Emperor Domitian.  Drawing from Revelation and their battles with the marketplace and the trade practices of the Empire and Ephesus. Applied concerns to our current context of economic, social, and ecological practices not respectful of the holiness of life.

-Gordon College Symposium on “Radical Discipleship”: April 2004.  Along with Shane Claiborne and Andrea Ferich, we presented a panel of perspectives on understanding the social and economic realities we face today in attempting to follow Jesus fully.

-Emergent Convention: San Diego: March 2004.  Spoke at a break-off session on “Ecology and the Life of the Church.”  Drew from Revelation, Wendell Berry, and Steven Bouma-Prediger.  Talked about the ethics of doing the right thing even when no noticeable difference is made.  Gave specific economic practices.

-Prayer Around the Cross: Sacred Heart Catholic Church: September 2003.  Spoke at their “prayer around the cross” service, reflecting on the cross in contextualization with the Roman Empire and four other Jewish groups in Jesus’ day: Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes, and Zealots/Sicarii.  I emphasized Barrabbas and the Zealots, drawing updated imperial parallels to the outlook that violence and brings purification and peace.

-West Philadelphia Mennonite Church: Sermon on earth-affirming eschatology: May 2003.  With Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove.  Drawing from the texts that have been abused for dualism and heaven-destined worldviews, I painted a picture from 2 Peter and Revelation a more earth-affirming worldview that calls us to stewardship and joy in the Creation.

-Panelist, Eastern University Panel Conversation on the War on Iraq: May 2003.  There were four students on the panel (2 pro-war, 2 con).  I took the con side with Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove.  Including reflections from the just war tradition, we shared why the war was illegitimate, unchristian, and unsupportable, in fact, demanding opposition.

-Chapel at Eastern University: October 2002.  Spoke on the call from Hebrews 13:3 to remember those who are suffering as if we ourselves were suffering.  This translates to a life that is sensitive to the needs of others, not through condescension but compassion.

-American Sociological Association Meeting, Eastern University: Spring 2001.  Presented a paper on “Why I Think Protestantism Still Has a Public Future”, through reflecting on Weber’s Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.  Noting that Protestantism is complicit in the worldview and application of industrial capitalism’s abuse of the earth, I defend Protestantism’s ability to also affect real social change in direct healing of the very problems it contributed to.
